Notes & Homework

 Skill: Groundstrokes

  • Contact Point: Approx 12-15” in front of front foot.
  • Weight Transfer: Load and Rotate. Extending forward through the ball.
  • Hands: Reach out with non paddle hand on forehands. Separate hands when hitting a 1 handed backhand.
  • Swing: Short Backswing- paddle butt to back hip. Swing plane to the side to initiate kinetic chain- not pendulum swing.

Drill: Self Feed Forehands

  • Place a pile of cones deep in each service box.
  • Player sets up on the baseline opposite the target cones with a ball basket.
  • Player takes 2 balls and hits a self fed forehand to each cone pile - 1 cross court and 1 down the line.

Drill: Hit Call

  • Set up players in transition zone straight on from each other or at baseline.
  • Controlled groundstroke rally back and forth. Players must say "HIT" when their opponent is contacting the ball.
  • Promotes watching ball off opponents paddle.
  • Can also be played doubles rally.

Skill: Transitioning Speed

  • Speed: Do not run to the line. Controlled steps at a brisk walk with paddle out in front of you.
  • Stance: Do not stop feet side by side (split step)- continue walking and adjust speed and direction if needed.
  • Contact Point & Weight Transfer: Accelerate or Decelerate to accommodate hitting the ball out in front of you with your weight transfer moving through the ball.
