Notes & Homework

Skill: Serve with Depth

  • Contact Point: Too in front = high shallow ball, contact just in front of front leg.
  • Weight Transfer: Load and rotate transferring forward into your shot.
  • Hands: Soft loose continental grip.
  • Swing: Low to high swing plane extending forward through the ball.
  • Depth: contact closer to the body and extend forward to create depth

Drill: Side to Side Serves

  • Divide the service box into 2 Halves (FH/BH sides) with cones.
  • Players set up cross court from each other on the baselines.
  • Receiving player holds paddle up on either the forehand or backhand side to distinguish the target for the server.
  • Serving partner targets the side determined by receiver.
  • Alternate serving and calling target each time.

Skill: Return of Serve

  • Contact Point: Focus on contact point out in front
  • Weight Transfer: Load and Rotate. Extending forward through the ball. This creates depth which is key for return of serve.
  • Hands: Reach out with non paddle hand on forehands. Separate hands when hitting a 1 handed backhand.
  • Swing: Short Backswing. Swing plane to the side to initiate kinetic chain.

Drill:  Target Returns

  • Place pile of cones in the outside corners  deep in each service box and in the middle deep.
  • Players set up cross court from each other on the baselines, 1 side is servers and 1 side is returners.
  • Servers will alternate hitting serves to their opponent's forehand and backhand.
  • Returners must return all serves at the target cones.
  • Go for 2 min round, switch from odd/even side.
