Thank you for attending Lesson 3 of our 12 week Training Series! Please note that lessons do not have to be taken in numerical order. You are welcome to start anytime during the 3 month rotation.

Notes & Homework

 Skill: 4th Shot Swing Volley

  • Contact Point: Out in front, approx 12-15” in front of toes. 
  • Weight Transfer: Load and rotate to allow weight to flow into your shot. Keep your weight low. Do not pick up with the shot. 
  • Hands: Eastern grip with laid back wrist. 
  • Swing: Swing through the ball like you are spinning a giant wheel. Low to high swing plane. No backswing behind the body.

Drill: Self Feed Drop & 4th Shot Swing

  • Players set up 1 at the baseline with the ball basket and 1 at NVL.
  • Baseline player self feeds drop shot.
  • NVL player works on 4th shot swing either out of the air or off the bounce.
  • Do not play out the ball - just 3rd and 4th.
  • Add depth cones for 4th shot player to encourage pushing them deep.

Skill: Punch Volley

  • Contact Point: Out in front. Push fwd through ball with guiding motion.
  • Weight Transfer: Allow weight to flow into your shot.
  • Body Positioning: Good Ready Position Hands: Continental grip with medium strength.
  • Swing: Follow through pointing your paddle out in front where you placed the ball. Do not over follow through-keep it compact and out in front.

Drill: Toss, Volley & Catch

  • Part #1: Players set up at NVZ cross court or straight on.
    • 1 Player hitting volleys and the other tossing.
    • Toss ball to hitter alternating forehand and backhand target.
    • Hitter focuses on 1 of the technical aspects of volley.
    • Tosser focuses on catching volley out in front and watching paddle face
  • Part #2: Same set up but players randomize tosses and focus on ball recognition of where their partner is tossing or hitting.
