350 Series: Skills & Drills Lab

Rescue & Reset

Takeaways & Training Tasks

Keep the momentum rolling with these quick steps:

  1. Refresh your memory with the 2 skills, 2 drills, and training video.
  2. Knock out the drills 2–3x before we meet again.
  3. Each time you play, pick one skill and make it your mission to use it often and on purpose.

Dinking: Rescue Dink

  • Use Rescue dink when in trouble, pulled out of position or wide.
  • Weight Transfer: Put on the breaks & breathe! EXHALE! Don’t pop up when
    hitting this shot.
  • Hands: VERY soft & relaxed with continental grip, lay back wrist.
  • Swing: Slow, slight lifting motion. Don’t lift too much
  • Strategy: If the ball gets behind you-down the line.

Scramble to Slow Down

  • Place target rings in NVZ mid depth and middle of each side.
  • Part #1: 1 player at NVZ and 1 at transition zone. NVZ player tosses a short ball into the NVZ.
  • Transition Zone player scrambles forward to softly dink ball in front of
    partners feet.
  • Alternate the tosser and scrambler.
  • Part #2: Players are Crosscourt at NVZ.
  • Hitting player starts closer to the T
    in middle to scramble.
  • 1 player tosses a sharp cross court dink and other player scrambles and
has to softly dink ball into NVZ in front of them. Players may ATP if it is an
    option.

Transition Zone Defense

  • Contact Point: Out in front, approximately 12-15” in front of toes.
  • Weight Transfer: Allow weight to flow into your shot. Push the ball forward
    with weight.
  • Body Positioning: Stagger your feet to allow ability to transfer weight.
  • Hands: Soft hands and wrist to provide shock absorber for ball.
  • Swing: Push forward through this ball. Do not swing up at it.

Transition Zone Alternator - Speed

  • Set Up 1 Player at NVZ and 1 Player in Transition Zone
  • Transition Zone player will alternate between a reset and an attack
  • Add in direction targets for an increased challenge
