Notes & Homework

Ā Skill: Blocking

  • Contact Point: Don't get too close to the body.
  • Weight Transfer: Allow weight to flow into your shot. Don’t lock your weight down like a brick wall.
  • Body Positioning: Good Ready Position: elbows out in front of body, Paddle up!
  • Hands: Soft hands and wrist to provide shock absorber for ball.
  • Swing: Just hold your paddle still and let it do the work. Do not chop at the ball or go out to meet the ball in front like a punch.

Drill: Ā Feed & Block

  • Ā Players stand straight on at NVZ.
  • 1 player feeds a medium paced ball at body of partner.
  • Part #1:Ā Partner must block ball back into NVZ with paddle.
  • COMPETITION ROUND: 1 min rounds to see how many feeds can reset into the NVZ successfully.

Skill: Defending the Overhead

  • Contact Point: Out in front, and typically low.
  • Weight Transfer: Allow weight to flow into shot. Use weight to direct the ball rather than swing at it.
  • Body Positioning: Athletic stance with weight forward.
  • Hands: Soft hands and wrist to provide shock absorber for ball.
  • Swing: Push this ball forward. Avoid swinging up at this ball.
