Thank you for attending Lesson 10 of our 12 week Training Series! Please note that lessons do not have to be taken in numerical order. You are welcome to start anytime during the 3 month rotation.

Notes & Homework 

Skill: Offensive Drop Shot:  More push through the ball, Better set up to ball, Diving drop with topspin

  • Contact Point: Contact Point out in front, approx 12-15” in front of toes. Push forward through the ball with a guiding motion.
  • Weight Transfer: Allow weight to flow forward into your shot. Load through the shot with weight transfer focusing on forward and low to create optimal ball flight.
  • Body Positioning: Square up to the ball: point your toes, hips, shoulders and paddle towards the ball.
  • Hands: Soft relaxed hand with continental grip, soft stable wrist, lay back or pronate your wrist.
  • Swing: Smooth,slow, even swing tempo with no backswing behind the body. Follow through pointing your paddle out in front directed at where you placed the ball. Will feel like an extended dink.

Drill: 3rd, 5th, 7th

  • Set up 3 cones on the sideline as guides: 1 at baseline, 1 mid-court, 1 at NVL.
  • 1 player at the baseline and 1 player at NVZ.
  • Can be done straight on or cross court.
  • NVZ player hits a ball to each cone depth. Should be cooperative but slightly challenging feeds.
  • Baseline player must hit a drop shot or reset ball at each cone - staying at each cone until they land one in the NVZ.
  • Once they have hit NVZ from cone 1 they move to cone 2 where they have to hit NVZ before moving to cone 3.
  • Make it harder with more pressure from feeder.

Skill: Transition Zone Swing Volley

  • Weight Transfer: Load and rotate to allow weight to flow forward into your shot. Plant and then push through contact.
  • Body Positioning: Step into the shot using weight transfer for power. Multiple small prep steps are better than fewer large steps.
  • Hands: Eastern grip with laid back wrist.
  • Swing: Swing through the ball like drawing a Nike swoosh to the side of you. Low to high swing plane. No backswing behind the body.

Drill:  Drop, Attack, Volley

  • Set up 3 cones on the sideline as guides: 1 at baseline, 1 at mid-court, 1 at NVZ.
  • 1 player at the baseline and 1 player at NVZ straight on.
  • NVZ player feeds a ball to each cone depth.
  • Baseline player hits a drop from the baseline walks forward to transition, hits a swing volley attack at mid-court, then a volley from NVZ. Focus is on footwork and not overrunning the attackable ball.
  • Accelerate forward to attack the ball and use your weight transfer to create power.
