Notes & Homework
Skill:Â Serve Strategy
- Emphasis first is depth to make returns harder for opponents.
- Best placement for serves are at backhands or at the body.
- Backhands are typically weaker.
- At the body will either jam them up or force them to run around and hit a forehand. Often resulting in a weaker return.
Drill:Â Side to Side Serves
- Divide the service box into 2 Halves (FH/BH sides) with cones.
- Players set up cross court from each other on the baselines.
- Receiving player holds paddle up on either the forehand or backhand side to distinguish the target for the server.
- Serving partner targets the side determined by receiver.
- Alternate serving and calling target each time.
Skill:Â Defending the Overhead
- Contact Point: Out in front, and typically low.
- Weight Transfer: Allow weight to flow into shot. Use weight to direct the ball rather than swing at it.
- Body Positioning: Athletic stance with weight forward.
- Hands: Soft hands and wrist to provide shock absorber for ball.
- Swing: Push this ball forward. Avoid swinging up at this ball.
Drill: Â Defending the Overhead
- 1 Player at NVZ, 1 Player at transition zone straight on skinny.
- Transition Zone player feeds an overhead to partner.
- NVZ player hits COOPERATIVE overhead.
- TZone player hits neutralizing shots back attempting to get them to land in NVZ.
