Notes & Homework

Skill: Offensive Drop Shot:  More push through the ball, Better set up to ball, Diving drop with topspin

  • Contact Point: Contact Point out in front, approx 12-15” in front of toes. Push forward through the ball with a guiding motion.
  • Weight Transfer: Allow weight to flow forward into your shot. Load through the shot with weight transfer focusing on forward and low to create optimal ball flight.
  • Body Positioning: Square up to the ball: point your toes, hips, shoulders and paddle towards the ball.
  • Hands: Soft relaxed hand with continental grip, soft stable wrist, lay back or pronate your wrist.
  • Swing: Smooth, slow, even swing tempo with no backswing behind the body. Follow through pointing your paddle out in front directed at where you placed the ball. Will feel like an extended dink.

Drill: Drop Shot Collector Cross Court:  CC is most offensive placement

  • 1 player at NVZ and 1 player at baseline.
  • NVZ player feeds balls to baseline player and keeps track of how many drops they hit in the NVZ.
  • Set timer for 1 min rounds. Count how many drop shots baseline player can land in NVZ or diving just behind the NVL in the 1 min round.
  • Repeat and see if you can beat your own time or compete with your drilling partner.

Drill: Transition Zone Neutralizer

  • Set up 3 cones on the sideline as guides: 1 at baseline, 1 mid-court, 1 at NVL.
  • 1 player at the baseline and 1 player at NVZ. Can be done straight on or cross court.
  • NVZ player hits a ball to each cone depth. These should be slightly challenging feeds.
  • Baseline player must hit a drop shot or reset ball at each cone- staying at each cone until they land one in the NVZ.
  • Once they have hit NVZ from cone 1 they move to cone 2 where they have to hit NVZ before moving to cone 3
  • Make it harder with more pressure from feeder.
  • Keep positions for timed rounds then switch roles.

 Skill: Mid-Court Resets

  • Contact Point: Contact Point out in front, approx 12-15” in front of toes.
  • Weight Transfer: Allow weight to flow into your shot. Push the ball forward with weight.
  • Body Positioning: Stagger your feet to allow ability to transfer weight.
  • Hands: Soft hands and wrist to provide shock absorber for ball.
  • Swing: Push forward through this ball. Do not swing up at it.

Drill: Transition Zone Trash Collector

  • Players set up straight on skinny 1 at NVZ and 1 at transition zone.
  • NVZ player feeds balls to transition zone player who has to reset/neutralize all balls back into the NVZ.
  • Feeds can be hit out of the air or off the bounce- variety is best!
  • Timed 2 min rounds- feeder counts how many TZ player can get into the NVZ.
