Dinking to Build the Point Part 1

Here are your notes and homework from the clinic. Keep practicing to solidify all you learned.

Notes & Homework

Skill: Middle Dink at Inside Foot

  • Dinking at the inside foot in the middle lane is profitable.
  • It often creates a pop up back in the middle on your side.
  • Must be low and precise to avoid being attacked.
  • Push wide then hit middle to jam them on inside foot.

Skill: Cross Court Dink to Pass

  • #1 Select the right ball: must be from the outside quadrant to pass down the line
  • #2 Aim just beyond your opponents feet - not to the back corner
  • Appropriate depth on this shot will take away and attackable ball from your opponent
  • Soften hand and take your time. Rushing this shot will put too much pace on it and lift it up.

Drill: Middle Dink Drill

  • Set up target rings next to the inside foot of each player.
  • Part #1: Players set up at NVZ cross court from each other.
    • Engage in cooperative dink rally 3 dinks then players must hit the middle target.
  • Part #2: Same as Part #1 but players may attack balls that are too high in the middle.

Drill: Cross Court Dink to Pass Toss

  • Target rings set up down the lines about 3 feet off the NVL
  • Set players up cross court from each other.
  • 1 Player is tossing a cross court ball into the outside quadrant
  • 1 Player is hitting the passing shot aiming at the target ring.
  • Rotate so all players hit and toss from both odd and even sides.
