400 Focus Series Clinic

Offensive Transitioning

Here are your notes and homework from the clinic. Keep practicing to solidify all you learned.

Notes & Homework

Skill: Offensive Drop Shot

  • Contact Point: Contact Point out in front. Push forward through the ball.
  • Weight Transfer: Weight transfer focusing on forward and low.
  • Hands: Soft relaxed hand, lay back wrist.
  • Swing: Smooth, slow, even swing tempo. Follow through pointing out in front.
  • Emphasis on forward and low with swing and weight transfer. Place this cross court.

Drill: Drop Shot Collector

  • Set up target rings in the outside quadrants of the NVZ.
  • 1 player at NVZ and 1 player at baseline.
  • NVZ player feeds balls to baseline player and keeps track of how many drops they hit in the NVZ.
  • Set timer for 1 min rounds. Count how many drop shots baseline player can land in NVZ or diving just behind the NVL in the 1 min round.
  • Repeat and see if you can beat your own time or compete with your drilling partner.

Drill: Transition Zone Neutralizer

  • Set up 3 cones on the sideline as guides: 1 at baseline, 1 mid-court, 1 at NVL.
  • 1 player at baseline and 1 at NVZ (straight on or cross court). NVZ player hits slightly challenging ball to each cone depth. Baseline player must hit a drop shot or reset ball at each cone - staying at each cone until they land one in the NVZ.
  • Make it harder with more pressure from feeder. Keep positions for timed rounds then switch roles.

Skill: Setting Up a Poach

  • Set Up
    • Hit cross court in front of your partner
    • Be aware of going too wide so you dont' set up a down the line passing shot.
  • Poach
    • Leave as soon as you know you are not taking the 3rd ball
    • Look to cut ball off at a diagonal to use weight transfer
    • Stay in the fight once you start it

Drill: Transition Zone Neutralizer

  • Set out circle or dot on the center line at transition zone. This is your starting point reference.
  • All 4 players set up in Zone 2 (transition zone).
  • Even side players initiate a cross court rally to each other.
  • Odd side players begin immediately to move forward looking for a poach opportunity.
  • Even side players must hit the ball 2 times before they can move forward to play out the point. They are looking to set up a poach and also go behind opponents if they get too poachy.
  • Perform 2 rallies starting on the even sides then switch roles and initiate from the odd side.
  • After 4 total rallies players switch odd/even sides and repeat.
