Notes & Homework

Skill: Blocking

  • Contact Point: Don't get too close to the body.
  • Weight Transfer: Allow weight to flow into your shot. Don’t lock your weight down like a brick wall.
  • Body Positioning: Good Ready Position: elbows out in front of body, Paddle up! Hands: Soft hands and wrist to provide shock absorber for ball.
  • Swing: Just hold your paddle still and let it do the work. Do not chop at the ball or go out to meet the ball in front like a punch.

Drill:Ā Speed Up & Block

  • Players stand straight on at NVZ.
  • Engage in a cooperative dink rally alternating which player hits the speed up.
  • Opponent is looking to recognize the speed up and block it back into the NVZ.
  • Improves ability to speed up consistently at the NVZ.
  • Improves ability to recognize and react to speed ups with successful blocks.

Skill: Fast Hands with Control

  • Compact swing finishing out in front to be ready
  • Keep elbows out in front of body - don't let them fall in by your sides
  • Use broad vision to see the court rather than hyper focusing on the ball.

Drill: Skinny Singles

  • Round #1 - must block ALL speed ups
  • Round #2 - can block or counter attack

Game Play Focus for the Week

  • See the Court and place your shots strategically
  • Use resets strategicallyĀ
