Thank you for attending Lesson 5 of our 12 week Training Series! Please note that lessons do not have to be taken in numerical order. You are welcome to start anytime during the 3 month rotation.

Notes & Homework

Drill: Swing Volley 

  • Contact Point: Out in front, approx 12-15” in front of toes.
  • Weight Transfer: Load and rotate to allow weight to flow into your shot. Keep your weight low. Do not pick up with the shot.
  • Hands: Eastern grip with laid back wrist.
  • Swing: Swing through the ball like drawing a Nike swoosh to the side of you. Low to high swing plane. No backswing behind the body.

Skill:  Offensive Drop Shot

  • Contact Point: Contact Point out in front. Push forward through the ball.
  • Weight Transfer: Weight transfer focusing on forward and low. Hands: Soft relaxed hand, lay back wrist.
  • Swing: Smooth, slow, even swing tempo. Follow through pointing out in front.
  • Emphasis on forward and low with swing and weight transfer. Place this cross court.

Drill: Drop & Roll

  • Place 3 cones in transition zone with balls on top of them.
  • Players stand straight on, 1 at NVZ and 1 at baseline. NVZ player initiates feed to baseline player to hit a drop shot.
  • NVZ player is aiming for target cones while baseline player is staying back and hitting drop shots.
  • Improves ability to keep opponents back with good 4th shot rolls.
  • Improves accuracy and consistency with drop shots and 4th shots.

Drill:  Transition Zone Neutralizer 

  • Set up 3 cones on the sideline as guides: 1 at baseline, 1 mid-court, 1 at NVL. 1 player at baseline and 1 at NVZ (straight on or cross court).
  • NVZ player hits slightly challenging ball to each cone depth.
  • Baseline player must hit a drop shot or reset ball at each cone - staying at each cone until they land one in the NVZ.
  • Make it harder with more pressure from feeder.
