Thank you for attending Lesson 1 of our 12 week Training Series! Please note that lessons do not have to be taken in numerical order. You are welcome to start anytime during the 3 month rotation.

Notes & Homework

 Skill: Topspin Dinking

  • Create topspin with laid back wrist & low to high swing plane-not wrist flicking or "rainbow" swing.
  • Contact Point: low contact = paddle tip down, mid contact = paddle horizontal
  • Hands: Soft Continental grip, lay back your wrist.
  • Swing: Smooth even swing plane in a low to high motion.

Drill: Cross Court Target Zones

  • Players stand cross court at NVZ and focus on unit turn and accuracy.
  • Set target zone for players to dink at for 1 min. Forehand to Forehand, Backhand to Backhand, Forehand to Backhand, Backhand to Forehand.
  • Drill on both the odd and even sides of the court.

Skill: ATP

  • Stance: Open stance towards the sideline
  • Weight Transfer: Moving into the ball
  • Contact Point: Low and out in front of you.
  • Defending the ATP: Prep paddle low and out in front of you. Move back and to the sideline to defend.

Drill: ATP & Block

  • 4 players set up at NVZ - 3 as if playing doubles and 4th near net post cross court from ATP hitter.
  • Cross court player at net post tosses steep dink cross court. Receiving player goes for ATP & player in front of them attempts to block the ATP.
  • ATP team shifts to receive the block.
  • Rotate through each player getting 2 turns = 3 ATP attempts on each turn.
  • Reverse the rotation so that players hit both forehand and backhand ATP.
